A friend wrote an entry about Susan Boyle with a link to a You Tube site. I logged onto the site and found it was the Britain's Got Talent show. The first sight of the character was that of a frumpy middle-aged lady inelegantly wolfing down a sandwich. She was described by one blogger as more like one's grandmother's bridge partner than a contestant for a talent show.
The same 3 judges, Piers Morgan, Amanda Holden and Simon Cowell could not hide their dismissive looks and skepticism at the sight of this plain looking woman. Hardnosed critics Cowell and Morgan displayed the usual rolling eyes, blowing of cheeks and the knowing look which said, "Oh, we have a live on here." Amanda Holden, being the gentler soul actually look worried, as if she felt sorry for the poor woman who it seemed was about to make a right fool of herself.
As she announced she was going to sing "I dreamed a dream" from the musical 'Les Miserables', there was an ironic cheer, but in a matter of seconds as she sang the first few notes n her pure clear voice, the 47-year-old Susan Boyle, the unmarried, unemployed and never-been-kissed spinster from "a collection of villages" (in her words) stunned the judges and audience alike. And when she hit the high note in the middle of the song, the audience rose as one in applause. In fact, so powerful was Susan Boyle's performance that many viewers were moved to tears.

So, what accounts for this hysteria? Is it the song, the singer or the story? I think it is the combination of all three and more. 'I dreamed a dream' is from that tear jerking musical. So, when the beatiful song was matched with the pure voice and passion of Boyle even the sternest of critic like Simon Corwell melted. He looked lovestruck during the entire rendition. wawawak :D
I believe she sang it with such passion because the song mirrored her personal life. She has been singing since she as 12 and has longed to be a professional singer. Somehow the world seemed to pass her by as she remained locked in the small Scottish village where she sang in the church coir. If she were to be offered a record deal now, and if only one percentage of the people who viewed her performance on You Tube were to buy her CD, Susan Boyle would achieve the Platinum Award of one million sales.
The promise of a dream fulfilled Susan Boyle strikes a chord in us. For each one of us, consciously or unconsciously, harbours a dream, a song that longs to a break free. Susan Boyle has sung the song which is unsung in our hearts
